Manager, Advancement

Reporting to the Director, Communications and External Relations, the Manager, Advancement creates and executes NOSM’s strategic fundraising plan that raises revenues for the School. The Manager is accountable for the implementation, coordination, supervision and culmination of fundraising events, projects and programs which are planned to meet the current and future financial objectives for NOSM. This includes major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, class giving, alumni program, faculty and staff campaigns and sponsoship. The Manager represents the image of the School, building community and regional relationshisp both internal and external that includes students and Alumni.


Tasks may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement long-term strategies, planning and goals for NOSM fundraising initiatives. Oversight of all fundraising activities including major campaigns, events and programs that will increase funding revenues and engagement in support of NOSM
  • Secures significant philanthropic support. Cultivates, solicits, stewards and recognizes donors in order to maximize philanthropic support, advocacy, and volunteerism for NOSM; building and maintaining relationships with school stakeholders
  • Responsible for the financial planning and control; prepares, implements and manages annual and long-term fundraising targets, monitors the endowment funds accounts and other long-term donor investments.
  • Establishes and manages a centralized, accurate record-keeping program for all donations, ensuring proper allocation and confidentiality according to established rules and regulations governing the NOSM charitable and reports on progress.
  • Recruits, develops and empowers a team of high-performance advancement professionals. Establishes and supports efforts to engage alumni and volunteers in support of NOSM in a meaningful way.
  • Provides the leadership and management of the Advancement Unit including establishing goals and targets, and human resource management.
  • Works with Communications to develop, distribute and maintain advancement communication materials and provide content for the website, publications and newsletters as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • A University degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Certified Fundraising Executive designation is an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience is required
  • Embody a strong commitment to the leading edge of advancement practice in Canada to enhance NOSM’s overall reputation
  • Ability to provide a positive public image to internal and external stakeholders to enable their engagement (friendraising) to support financial goals for initiatives
  • Ability to present the story of NOSM to diverse groups and individuals in support of fundraising events, fund development projects and campaigns
  • Long-range vision and planning to engage Alumni to continue their involvement with NOSM
  • Understand, analyze, interpret and prepare financial statements as related to investment and endowed funds and policies
  • Comprehensive understanding of investment strategies and policies relating to endowment and expendable donation strategies
  • In-depth knowledge of awards process and determining values of financial aid for learners
  • Financial services expertise to advise donors and prospects on benefits of investing. i.e. charitable trusts, annuities, life insurance policies, estate planning
  • Ability to secure significant philanthropic support. Cultivate, solicit, steward and recognize donors in order to maximize philanthropic support, advocacy, and volunteerism
  • Build and maintain relationships with school stakeholders
  • Ability to actively promote activities including fundraising campaigns, fund development projects and campaigns
  • Develop, implement and promote a Planning Giving program
  • Develop, coordinator and implement a donor recognition program for all that reflects gratitude
  • Ability to seek and provide recommendations for new sources of revenue using innovative and enterprising fundraising mechanisms
  • Ability to develop plans and timelines to address fundraising events, activities and promotion
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian Revenue Agency charitable registration program and regulations


  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
