Job Description

Pitblado Law is a leading full service law firm in Winnipeg, seeking an experienced Director, Business Development and Marketing. Our mission is to deliver excellence in creative solutions for clients through business knowledge, superior advocacy, innovative and strategic approach, and fresh insight. Our experienced lawyers provide services to clients across a wide range of practice areas.


Position Summary:

 

This role will provide high-level business development strategy, advisory, and support to the Firm. Reporting directly to the Managing Partner, this position is a catalyst for change and is responsible for driving evolution of internal and external business operations to achieve strategic goals of topline growth and business efficiency. It is responsible for building and strengthening Pitblado Law's market position and presence. This role will identify, evaluate, and execute on opportunities to drive growth, awareness, and/or operational excellence for Pitblado Law. Key activities include improving communication and processes for clients and within the Firm, conducting analysis, and presenting findings to the Managing Partner and/or Executive Committee. It includes but is not limited to:

 

  • Strategy, Analytics & Reporting

  • Culture & Communication
  • Industry Benchmarking & Collaboration

 

Principal Accountabilities:

 

Strategy, Analytics & Reporting (Internal)

  • Lead and implement strategic planning development and execution process (inclusive of budgeting, forecasting, rate changes, and/or projections)
  • Lead Business Development and Marketing report development (qualitative/quantitative ROI) for distribution to the Executive Committee
  • Identify ongoing opportunities for topline growth and/or efficiency in business operation
  • Provide strategic advisory to Managing Partner and/or Executive Committee
  • Investigate strategic opportunities for growth (internal and external)
  • Lead strategy and management of Firm sponsorships and community relations

 

Innovation, Development, & Change Management (Internal/External)

  • Develop professional development and/or practice goals for individual lawyers as it pertains to areas of strength, interest, and expertise
  • Identifying and encourage effective thought leadership and Business Development and Marketing opportunities for lawyers
  • Lead ongoing market and industry research, competitive intelligence, and benchmarking

 

Digital, Marketing, Brand & Public Relations (External)

  • Lead continued improvement (SEO) to entrench the Firm's #1 market position online
  • Lead content strategy development for execution across all marketing mediums
  • Build Firm credibility and market appreciation for scope of work through promotion of high-profile transactions and notable work
  • Develop and implement public relations strategies that further positive media exposure, visibility, and lawyer engagement
  • Identify areas of continued brand development and top of mind awareness

 

Business Development (Internal/External)

  • Lead client relationship-building initiatives as appropriate to practice groups/the Firm
  • Direct business development initiatives across practices, groups, and markets
  • Lead and facilitate cross-selling opportunities between practice groups
  • Identify areas of improvement within Firm processes and/or procedures
  • Lead RFP process and coach lawyers through strategic approach and response
  • Lead client intelligence and retention process (via client interviews) with Managing Partner
  • Lead engagement, referral opportunities, and market reconnaissance with global affiliate membership
  • Lead and mentor business development and marketing team to achieve strategic goals

 

Culture, Collaboration & Communication (Internal)

  • Lead development and execution of opportunities to build Firm culture and engagement
  • Lead recruitment promotion and support the Executive Committee process as needed
  • Lead communication initiatives to and amongst lawyers and staff
  • Develop and lead opportunities for Firm-wide succession planning and knowledge transfer
  • Maintain relationships with key industry firms, leaders, membership and event organizations
  • Actively engage in professional market/industry trend and forecast forums

 

Qualifications:

 

  • A college degree or university degree in marketing, business or communications is required, plus a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
  • A minimum of 5 years of strategic marketing and/or business development experience or in a marketing director role, ideally in a professional services environment (law, accounting or engineering)
  • Demonstrated capability in developing and executing strategic plans, market analysis and relationship development, with proven results and impact
  • Business acumen and a strong personal presence that instills confidence and a high degree of credibility when interacting with the Firm's leadership, lawyers, clients and external contacts
  • Ability to use appropriate interpersonal styles to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the Firm
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
