Job Description

Position Profile 

The Executive Director, Brand Strategy is a key member of the Executive Office, providing leadership to the external positioning of the Edmonton brand through coordinated efforts across EEDC’s business units and to external stakeholders. This roleresponsible for establishing the overall strategy for how our brand is positioned and amplified, will work with marketing and communications personnel at the City of Edmonton, across EEDC business units, and in stakeholder organizations to ensure a unified approach. This position plays a critical role in EEDC’s success of leading through influence and enabling others to deliver results aligned to the corporate mandate and objectives. 

Reporting to and working with the CEO, the Executive Director, Brand Strategy establishes the overall creative direction, rhythm, timelines and coordination for positioning Edmonton as one of the exciting cities to watch in the Northern Hemisphere over the next 3-5 years. The successful candidate will also focus on enhancing EEDC and Edmonton’s interconnected reputations through effective communications strategies, both at home and abroad.  

Job Details 

Strategic Planning and Management 

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic marketing and communications plan to advance Edmonton’s brand identity and broaden the awareness of EEDC’s programs and priorities 

  • Work closely with City of Edmonton partners in the evolution and implementation of the joint Brand & Reputation strategy  

  • Create marketing and public relations strategies that will allow EEDC to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with the media  

  • Serve as marketing and communications subject matter expert, both internally and to our stakeholders 

Leadership and Development 

  • Oversee development of all EEDC’s corporate office marketing and communications needs, including the annual report, event marketing collateral, digital communications, websites and social media, providing leadership and coordination to EEDC’s digital and social media strategies and tactics 

  • Serve as the lead point person for the media and build public relations system/process that build skills in divisional communications leaders 

  • Exercise judgment and attention to detail to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare high quality speaking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed 

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of a small Marketing team, external contractors and the Marketing and Communications Networks including budgeting, planning and staff development 

  • Promote a values-based culture of high performance and continuous improvement that prioritizes both urgency and a commitment to quality 

  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustmentsusing a consistent, supportive and collaborative approach 


  • 10 years’ relevant experience working with C-Suite level, brand management, marketing or external communications 

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field 

  • Highly professional individual with demonstrated ability to handle private, confidential information maintaining complete trust and confidentiality 

  • Proven analytical and operational abilities with ability to perform as an effective tactical and strategic thinker 

  • Self-starter who handles fast deadlines, ambiguity and pressure with humor & grace; the ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs 

  • Experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications and directories 

  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier partners, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve national recognition 

  • Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of marketing and communications specialists 


  • Must be able to travel within the Edmonton region as well as internationally
