Job Description

Location:  Calgary or Toronto


The Sovereign General Insurance Company is looking for a Content Marketing Manager to drive our marketing strategy through our owned, earned and paid media channels.  This individual will play a key role in bringing our brand story and key value proposition to life, driving high value results, operational efficiencies and consistency in voice and messaging.  The ideal candidate will be a gifted content strategist who understands the role content plays within the greater marketing mix. They’ve created successful content strategies in the past and know how to tie their efforts back to the bottom line. This role requires an entrepreneurial and creative individual with exceptional communication, writing and editing skills.  They instinctively work collaboratively, and have a track record of delivering complex marketing programs across all marketing channels to a variety of audiences. Your Impact:



  • Lead a cross-functional effort to develop a content marketing strategy

  • Manage Sovereign’s social media channels, ensuring each channel is clearly defined and content is aligned to maximize our marketing efforts

  • Establish and work with content owners and subject matter experts across the organization to align content efforts with business goals, while influencing the development, production, presentation, evaluation, sharing and measurement of content

  • Manage key message development and dissemination, working closely with other members of the marketing team to develop, continually update and train employees on marketing tools from a style guide and messaging perspective

  • Manage outside vendors as required



  • Develop standards, systems and best practices for content creation, distribution, maintenance, retrieval and repurposing

  • Develop and manage an annual comprehensive content marketing strategy and editorial calendar

  • Continuously evolve content strategy to align with business goals and brand strategy

  • Own and lead the management of Sovereign’s social media strategy

  • Develop proactive earned media strategy to support content marketing efforts

  • Be an active participant in brand revitalization and digital redevelopment work



  • Measure the effectiveness of content through analytics, striving to continuously optimizing content to drive results

  • Contribute to the overall marketing measurement framework through content marketing and social media efforts

  • Ensure all content is properly tagged and tracked for measurement

  • Lead social media measurement efforts, developing dashboards and regular management reports



  • Participate in projects, meetings, conferences as required

  • Build and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external contacts

  • Undertake any other related appropriate duties and activities as assigned.


    Your Expertise:

  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in an agency or communications department where content marketing, digital and social media are key components of an integrated communications program

  • Excellent knowledge of communications principles, public/media relations techniques, social and digital media channels, and commonly used computer software

  • Media/influencer relations experience is an asset

  • Experience in financial services industry or other regulated industry is an asset

  • University or College degree in communications, marketing or journalism is preferred

  • High level of creativity, attention to detail, and project management skills

  • Knowledge of clear or plain language principles is a must

  • Highly developed skills in researching complex topics and interpreting them into concise, easy-to-understand information

  • Previous experience successfully preparing content for different channels – e.g. digital, social and print

  • Sound judgment and creativity skills to develop a wide range of materials – e.g. –videos, infographics, brochures, reports, news releases, key messages and marketing copy, etc.

  • Excellent written communication skills coupled with proven editorial skills

  • Proven ability to tell an engaging corporate story using words, images, and video and an understanding of how to create content that draws in an audience

  • Possesses a passion for marketing and communications and is constantly on the lookout for new strategies and tactics to drive improved marketing performance based on measurable results

  • Experience tracking marketing activities, preparing reports and providing analysis and recommendations for future improvements and enhancements

  • Must be able to multi-task, be deadline driven and need minimal supervision

  • Must have an appetite to work in a test and learn environment
